First: Thanks Jans
…for organizing the beautiful tour with Iveta (Vanaga) through the old city of Riga. I learned a lot about the history of Latvia and Riga – that was super interesting! Basically, Riga has been a major trade center on the Baltic Sea for a long time. It was founded in 1201 by a German. Riga has a rich cultural heritage, with influences from various empires and styles. In the course of history, Riga was ruled by different powers, such as Sweden, and Russia, until it became independent in 1918.
Exploring the Old Town
Riga is a beautiful and vibrant city in Latvia. Situated on the banks of the Daugava River, Riga is the capital and largest city of the country, known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and lively atmosphere.
When walking through the streets of Riga, you can’t help but be super-impressed by the city’s unique blend of old-world charm and modern flair. The Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage, has narrow and colorful streets with buildings mixing Gothic, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles.

Cultural Experiences and Green Spaces
Beyond the Old Town, Riga has lots of museums and art galleries, as well as green spaces, with parks and gardens. In fact, I spend almost my entire Monday in such a park, relaxing from my flight next to the canal – loved that 🙂 The main river that flows through the city of Riga is called Daugava.
